Two Truths and A Lie (Rules And 100+ Examples)

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE

Two Truths and a Lie is one of the best ice-breaker games and a great back to school game as well. You can play it with friends and family or with people you just met. It requires zero equipment or setup, and it is a super fun game you can play anytime.

You might think that it is as simple as making something up, but there’s a bit more strategy involved. Let’s go over how to play, some tips for coming up with the best lies, and a few suggestions for your next game.

HOW TO PLAY TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE

The setup for two truths and a lie is very simple.

  1. First, have a group of people sitting together. You don’t have to be in a circle, but at least have everyone in the same vicinity.
  2. Next, choose someone to start. They must say three statements out loud. Two of these statements must be true, and one must be a lie.
  3. Finally, everyone should guess which statement was a lie. Then, have the player reveal the correct one.

You can go in sequence or have the person who guessed correctly go next. This continues until everyone has had a turn. If you want to play this fun game with some alcoholic beverages, make sure to check out our guide to the Two Truths and a Lie Drinking Game!

HOW TO CRAFT THE BEST TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE: RETIREMENT EDITION SETUP

As we mentioned, there is a bit of strategy you can use. These are very simple but very effective. Let’s go over some helpful tips and why they work.

POKER FACE

This applies to your face as well as to your tone of voice. When you are making your statements, try to keep the same tone for each. Don’t giggle or look away when saying your lie because that will be a dead giveaway.

STATEMENT ORDER

Another good tip is to switch up the order of your lies. Many people try and say their two truths immediately and leave the lie for the third statement. Changing things up will throw people off.

BELIEVABLE LIES

When you are telling your lie, try and say something believable. The more believable it sounds, the better. For example, you wouldn’t say you have 1 million subscribers on Instagram unless you are quite famous. Instead, say something like I have a famous person following me on Instagram. This is more believable.

OUTRAGEOUS TRUTHS

On the flip side, a great tactic is to say a truth that sounds outrageous. This makes it sound like a lie, especially if you pair it with a believable lie.
