If you’re a big fan of word games, you’re going to absolutely love this board game. Tapple is a fast-paced game in which players name things that fit inside a given category. The twist? Each word must start with a letter that is still available on the Tapple wheel, which will get much more difficult as the game progresses. So, brush up on your general knowledge and vocabulary, and let’s get to know the rules for Tapple!

SETUP FOR TAPPLE
Before we can dive into the Tapple board game instructions, we’ve got to set up the game. But don’t worry. Set up is as easy as pie!
First, make sure your Tapple wheel has batteries by flipping it over to the back and inserting batteries if necessary. Then, switch on the timer and remove the category cards.
Place the category cards in easy reach for all players in the middle of the table, and place the wheel right-side up right beside it. If you are playing Tapple with a larger group of people, you might want to pass the wheel around as players get their turn, instead of simply placing it in the middle of the table.
HOW TO PLAY TAPPLE: TAPPLE GAME RULES
The player with a middle name that starts with a letter closest to A goes first! Keep in mind that after the first player has their turn, play moves clockwise, so the second player to play will be the player on the left.
CHOOSE A CATEGORY
Before you officially begin, you’ve got to pick a category card and choose a category from the card. Choose a category from the blue and white side for an easier game, and a category from the red and yellow side for a harder game. If it’s “Player’s Choice”, be creative and choose a category of your own!
NAME ANSWERS FOR THE CATEGORY
After announcing the category to everybody, tap the timer button in the middle of the Tapple wheel to get started. This starts the 10-second timer for the first player to play. On their turn, the player must something that belongs in the category that starts with a letter that is available on the wheel. After saying something in that category, the player must press down the first letter of their answer so that that letter is no longer available to be played for that round. Then, the player resets the timer by pressing the button in the middle of the wheel for the player on their left.
Take turns saying something for the chosen category, pressing down the first letter of the answer, and resetting the timer.
As you play, fewer and fewer letters will be available, making it more difficult to find a word for that category.
You’ll notice you’ll have to become super creative as the letters slowly dwindle.
ELIMINATION
As the game becomes more difficult as letters become unavailable in the category, players will begin to be eliminated from the round.
Players are eliminated if they:
- Cannot complete their turn before the 10-second timer goes off
- Say something that doesn’t belong in the category (which is decided by vote)
- Press a letter for an unaccepted answer
Once someone is eliminated, continue the round with the player on the eliminated player’s left continuing to play. Continue to play until only one player remains.
OVERTIME RULES FOR TAPPLE
Have you managed to use all the letters on the Tapple wheel and more than one player is still left playing? In this case, the remaining players will have to do an overtime round to determine a winner.
According to Tapple overtime rules, players must reset the letters and choose a new category. However, in this round, players must name two things in a category within 10 seconds, each starting with a unique letter that is still available on the wheel. This overtime round is sure to get your hearts pumping!
If, by some miracle, you manage to use all the letters again and there is still more than one player remaining, do another overtime round. But this time, players must give three answers for each category within 10 seconds!
STARTING A NEW ROUND
The last player remaining in a round is the winner. This player gets to collect the category card for that round, which equals one point.
If you play overtime, the player who wins collects all the category cards for that round, including the overtime category cards.
Choose a new category card to start a new round and reset the letter keys by releasing the lever.
END OF GAME
Keep playing round after round until a player wins three category cards. But feel free to adjust this number according to how long you want to play Tapple!

What Happens If You Use All the Letters in Tapple?
If you’ve used all the letters in Tapple and there’s still more than one player left, the remaining players continue to play. However, the players must now answer two answers for a new category, with each answer starting with a different letter, all within the same 10-second time limit.
Can You Repeat Words on Tapple?
No, players cannot repeat words in Tapple. In fact, it would be impossible to do so, as once a player names a word, the letter that begins with that word would be pressed down, meaning it would no longer be available.
How Long Is the Timer in Tapple?
The timer in Tapple is a shocking 10 seconds short for each player. That means players only get a few seconds to think of a word in a category that starts with an available letter. If they don’t think of a letter in time, they’re out!
